Ingredients
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 large yellow onion, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 12–16 oz (340-450g) plant-based ground (e.g., Beyond Meat, Impossible Foods)
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 2 tbsp yellow mustard
- 1 tbsp vegan Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
- 1 cup (approx. 112g) vegan cheddar or American-style shredded cheese
- 4–6 large flour tortillas or large lettuce leaves (butter lettuce, romaine)
- For Topping: Dill pickle slices, sliced tomatoes, shredded lettuce
- Optional: Vegan mayo or extra burger sauce for serving
Instructions
- 1. Sauté Aromatics: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add diced onion and cook until softened and translucent, 5-7 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- 2. Brown ‘Meat’: Add plant-based ground to the skillet. Break up with a spoon and cook, stirring frequently, until browned and cooked through, 7-10 minutes.
- 3. Build Flavor: Stir in ketchup, mustard, and vegan Worcestershire sauce. Season generously with salt and pepper. Mix well and simmer for 2-3 minutes to meld flavors.
- 4. Melt Cheese: Reduce heat to low. Sprinkle vegan cheese shreds evenly over the ‘meat’ mixture. Cover skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until cheese is melted and gooey. Remove from heat.
